“The future depends on what we do in the present.” — Mahatma Gandhi
Hey there Reader,
With all the things going on these days, I’ve been thinking a lot about the future.
Not in a dreamy, far-off way.
In a very real, it-is-already-here kind of way.
We are living through changes that are reshaping the way we work, communicate, learn, lead, and make decisions.
AI is part of that.
Technology is part of that.
Economic uncertainty is part of that.
Changing workplaces and cultural shifts are part of that too.
And with every major change, there is one question I do not think we ask enough: Who gets left behind?
Because change does not impact everyone equally.
Some people get more access, more information, more support, and a seat in the strategy conversations early.
Others only find out when the decision has already been made.
Some people have the time, confidence, training, and resources to adapt.
Others are expected to figure it out quietly and quickly.
That is where leadership matters.
Because the future should not only be designed by the people who already feel comfortable in it.
If we are not careful, change can widen gaps that already exist.
The people with the most access get further ahead. The people with the least support fall further behind. And then we act surprised when trust breaks down.
I think about this a lot in the work I do around culture, belonging, and performance.
Because innovation is not just about tools.
It is about people.
It is about whether people feel prepared or powerless, included or ignored, curious or afraid, empowered or replaceable.
And this does not only apply to organizations.
It applies to our families, communities, and personal lives too.
When things are changing, who are we checking on?
Who are we explaining things to?
Who are we inviting along?
Who are we assuming is fine because they are quiet?
Who is afraid to say, “I don’t understand”?
The future will keep arriving.
The question is whether we will build it with enough humanity, courage, and awareness to bring more people with us.
Because progress that leaves people behind is not the kind of progress I want to celebrate. How about you?
Something to think about:
Who around you may need more support, clarity, or encouragement as things continue to change?
Take action:
This week, look at one change happening in your workplace, family, business, or community. Ask yourself: Who has the least information, the least power, or the least support right now? Then take one step to include, explain, support, or advocate.
Then, you know what to do next...Hit reply and tell me - Where do you think we need more humanity as the future keeps arriving?
All the love,
Maria
